Lock Rekeying — New Keys, Same Locks

Your locks are fine. It is the keys floating around out there that are the problem — rekeying retires all of them.

What rekeying actually changes

Inside every standard cylinder is a stack of small pins set to match one key pattern. Rekeying swaps those pins for a different combination. The lock body, the finish, the deadbolt and the strike all stay on the door; only the internal code changes. From that moment the old keys turn nothing, and a freshly cut key operates the lock.

It is the right answer far more often than people expect, because most reasons for changing locks are about who holds a key, not about the lock being defective. If the hardware still works smoothly and looks the way you want, there is rarely a reason to throw it away.

Rekey or replace? An honest comparison

Rekey when

The hardware works well and your only concern is who has a key.

Replace when

The lock is worn, corroded, damaged, or you want a different type or grade.

Rekey keeps

The existing finish and door prep — nothing on the door changes visually.

Replace changes

The hardware itself, which may also mean new strikes or fresh boring work.

When people rekey

  • Right after closing on a house — you have no idea how many copies exist
  • Tenant turnover in a rental unit between leases
  • After a housekeeper, contractor, dog walker or ex-partner stops having access
  • When a keyring goes missing and had an address tag on it
  • To get several doors onto one key instead of carrying four

Keying multiple doors alike

If the front door, side door and garage entry take three separate keys, rekeying is the moment to fix that. Where the cylinders are compatible, they can be re-pinned to a single key so one key opens everything. Compatibility depends on the brand and keyway of each lock, so the technician checks the hardware on site before promising it. Tell dispatch how many doors you have when you call.
