When new hardware is the right call

Changing a lock means removing what is on the door and installing something new: cylinder, latch, strike and all. It is the right choice when the existing hardware has reached the end of its life, when it never suited the door, or when you want a different type of lock than what is fitted. If the only issue is who holds a key, rekeying is usually the smarter spend — we will say so on the phone.

Hardware ages faster near the coast. Salt-laden air pits finishes and works into mechanisms, and afternoon sun on a west-facing door does the rest. Locks that would last a decade inland can look tired here in a few years, and a sticky, grinding exterior lock is often simply worn out rather than broken.

What gets replaced

Deadbolts

Single or double cylinder, matched to the door thickness and existing bore.

Knob and lever sets

Including lever hardware chosen for easier operation.

Handlesets

Front-door units combining a grip handle with a deadbolt above.

Mortise locks

Common on older and some condo doors; a different install than a bored lock.

Fit matters more than the box it came in

A new lock only performs as well as its installation. Backset, door thickness and bore size have to match, the latch has to meet the strike squarely, and the strike itself needs to be anchored into the frame rather than just the trim. A common cause of a door that will not latch after a DIY change is a strike a few millimetres out of line. That alignment work is part of the job when a technician does it.

Before your appointment

  • Count the doors and note which are exterior
  • Check whether your HOA or condo association specifies a finish or hardware type
  • Decide if all new locks should share one key
  • Mention if a door is metal, hurricane-rated or unusually thick — it affects hardware choice
