Door Lock Repair for Sticking & Failing Locks

A lock rarely fails without warning. It gets stiff, then stubborn, then one day the key stops turning entirely.

Fix it before it strands you

Most residential lock failures announce themselves. The key needs a wiggle. The handle droops. The door has to be pulled toward you before the deadbolt will throw. Those are early symptoms of wear, corrosion or a door that has shifted in its frame, and they are far easier to deal with while the lock still works than after it seizes with you on the wrong side of it.

Repair is not always the answer. Some cylinders are worn past the point of adjustment, and some hardware is simply cheap enough that replacement makes more sense than labour spent on it. A technician will tell you which of the two you are looking at instead of charging for a repair that will not hold.

Faults we commonly repair

Key sticks or needs jiggling

Usually a worn key, worn wafers or debris in the cylinder.

Latch does not catch

Frequently a strike alignment issue rather than a fault in the lock.

Loose handle or lever

Fixings backed out over time, or a worn spindle inside the set.

Deadbolt drags

The door or frame has moved, so the bolt no longer meets the strike squarely.

Broken key in the cylinder

Extraction, then a new key cut to the correct pattern.

Humidity, salt and doors that move

Coastal conditions are hard on hardware. Salt air corrodes internal springs and pins, and seasonal humidity swings make timber doors swell and shrink so a lock that lined up perfectly in January binds in August. A lot of what looks like a broken lock here is actually a door that has moved, and the fix is at the strike and the frame rather than inside the cylinder.

The limits of a repair

  • Not every lock is repairable — badly corroded or heavily worn cylinders are replaced instead
  • Parts availability varies, particularly for older or discontinued hardware
  • Serious frame, hinge or structural door damage is carpentry, not locksmithing
  • If replacement is the better value, we will say so rather than bill for the repair
