Car Key Programming — Transponders, Remotes & Fobs
A key that fits the lock is only half the job. The car also has to recognise it — that is programming.
Why a correctly cut key still will not start the car
Since immobilisers became standard, the metal blade only handles the doors and the cylinder. Starting the engine depends on a chip in the key exchanging a code with a module in the car. If that exchange fails, the engine cranks and dies, or does not crank at all, and the dashboard usually shows a key or immobiliser symbol. This is the page for that symptom.
Programming is done with equipment that connects to the vehicle's diagnostic port and re-teaches which keys are authorised. It is not a universal procedure. Every manufacturer does it differently, some platforms require a security wait, and some require access credentials that not every tool has. Anyone promising it works on every car on the road is overselling.
What we program
Transponder chips
The chip embedded in the key head that answers the immobiliser challenge.
Remote functions
Lock, unlock, trunk and panic buttons paired to the receiver in the car.
Proximity fobs
Push-to-start keys that must be authorised before the start button responds.
Aftermarket keys you already bought
Bring-your-own fobs are sometimes programmable — sometimes not. See the FAQ.
Honest limits worth knowing
We would rather set expectations on the phone than have a technician arrive and stop halfway.
- Coverage varies by manufacturer, model and year — there is no universal programmer
- Some vehicles enforce a mandatory security delay before a new key is accepted
- Certain recent platforms restrict programming to manufacturer-linked systems
- Cheap online fobs are sometimes clones that no tool can pair to the vehicle
Symptoms that usually mean programming, not mechanics
- Engine cranks normally but dies after a second or two
- A key or padlock icon flashes on the dash when you try to start
- The blade opens the door but the push-start button does nothing
- A newly cut key from elsewhere turns fine but the car ignores it
Why use a mobile programmer
- Programming done at the vehicle, so a non-starting car does not need to be towed
- Model checked with dispatch before dispatch rather than after arrival
- Cutting and programming can be combined in one visit where supported
- Serving Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties
